Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to teach and to start a school. After my study abroad in Honduras, I wanted to start one there or somewhere in Central America. But as I lived life, I realized that it was not likely that my family would move to Central America. So, I decided to “bloom where I was planted” and adjust my dreams.
Many years ago, at my grandfather’s funeral, I learned that one of his favorite verses was Jeremiah 6:16: "This is what the LORD says:
'Stand at the crossroads and look;
Ask for the ancient paths
Ask where the good way is,
And walk in it,
And you will find rest for your souls.'”
I held on to this verse and knew that if I started a school, this would be the cornerstone verse. SO, I had a verse for my school – but no name, no space, and no students (except my own children).
Later on, I read the book of Jeremiah in Spanish, and when I came across this verse, the phrase, los senderos antiguos, stood out to me, and I held on to it as the name for my school. SO, now I had a verse for my school and a name, but still no space nor students.
In 2021, after having homeschooled my children for many years and being involved in different schools and learning environments, I wondered whether it was time to start my own school. I wasn’t sure, but I decided to at least start sharing my dream. I shared it with Paul Whitmire who was the director of an inner city mission called Cross and Crown in downtown OKC. He showed me one of the small and beautiful buildings they owned. It had been a youth center but was closed due to Covid. They wanted it used but didn’t know what to do with it. He turned to me, held up the keys, and said, “Here you go. You can start your school here.” Wow! I drove home thanking God and singing, Ask and it shall be given unto you! Now I had a verse, a name, AND a building, but still no students.
WELL, there was a family from Mexico that lived right behind this building. They were looking for a Christian, CLASSICAL school for their children, and they were connected with this mission. So when they heard about the idea of the school, they contacted me, signed up, and shared information with other families that also signed up. At last, I had my little school that started with 10 students.
Well, the story continues with God’s provision for funds, teachers, and a bigger space. Taylor Cave so graciously welcomed us to use space at South Walker Church of Christ. More like-minded teachers joined us. We are now in our fourth year with 22 students. I was prepared to do the work necessary to look for students, teachers, space, and funds. But for the most part, I have waited, and God has provided. It is a very satisfying feeling to feel connected to God in this way: to have this desire that He put on my heart and to watch Him fulfill it in His ways, to have this privilege of working with Him.
